Meet the Pie Man

 

Tom Cull is Director & Head Chef of both Tom's Pies: a range of handmade gourmet pies and Dartmoor Kitchen: The Southwest's most stylish and highly regarded outside catering company. Both are multi award winning and held in high regard though they started from very humble beginnings.

Tom was raised in a cooking environment and has been inspired and guided by food from an early age, cooking with produce grown and sourced on his own Dartmoor doorstep. Despite no formal training, Tom worked for a variety of prestigious restaurants both close to home and across Australia. He went on to head chef on private charter yachts in the Caribbean before the pull of returning to Devon became too strong to resist.

Using the experience and knowledge gained while travelling he decided to pursue his own venture. In 2004 Dartmoor Kitchen was born. A barn on the families 40acre organic farm was converted into a kitchen and Tom started selling his gourmet pies to local grocers, deli's and cafes. He soon outgrew the kitchen and a larger venue was needed. Tom and his team moved to a unit on a farm just outside Exeter. From here he was able to run an additional business simultaneously, catering for weddings and events across the region. Tom's Pies and Dartmoor kitchen continue to run side by side as the business takes over more and more space on the farm!

Both businesses have gone from strength to strength with the Pies winning multiple awards from 'Taste of the West', 'Great Taste' and 'British Pie Awards'. Tom was a finalist for the 'Entrepreneur of the Year' award in 2007 and won 'Southwest Producer of the Year' in 2008. That same year Tom featured in a prime time ITV show named 'Tom's Big Feast'. Dartmoor Kitchen has gone on to win the prestigious 'West Country Wedding Caterer of the Year' for 4 years consecutively and is now recognised as the Southwest's Caterer of choice. Tom's Pies still supply small independent grocer's, cafes and pubs as well as gracing the deli counters of the UK's most famous foodhalls such as Harrods, Fortnum&Mason and Selfridges.

All Tom's Pies are still made using the best locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and Tom’s original ethos is un-compromised. Tom’s Pies continues to produce high quality handmade artisan products made from the best sustainably sourced local ingredients. And this is something Tom Cull is exceptionally proud of!
